See New Renderings of the Eastside Regional Park's Rec Center

By Armando Landin

One of the largest projects planned for the Eastside Regional Park in El Paso will be the recreation center/natatorium that will sit on the park's southern side.

As planning for the park ramps up, we're getting a better look at the recreation center through renderings posted by the center's architect.

A final design was recently chosen in public meetings, and the site plan shows various recreation and office rooms, a gymnasium, and a large pool area within the building. The aquatics area will include a natatorium with a 50-meter "competition-ready" pool and an adjacent a warm up/cool down pool

Just outside the structure, the plan includes a recreational pool with a "lazy river" and water slides. Dozens of trees surround the building, play areas, and nearby parking spaces.

The recreation center is included in phase one of the park's construction. There will be a total of three phases in which the massive 92-acre park will be constructed, making it nearly twice as large as Album Park, also in East El Paso.

The Eastside Regional Park, located along Hueco Club Road south of Montana Avenue, is a $48 million Quality of Life project approved by voters in 2012.

Other phases of the construction plan include four diamond fields, six flat fields, handball, volleyball, and multi-use courts. Playgrounds, a dog park, a skate park, a BMX park, and an amphitheater are also planned.

Construction of the first phase should see "substantial completion" by summer of 2018, according to the City's website. The design of this phase has been created by In*Situ Architecture of El Paso and the Dallas office of Perkins+Will Global.
