New Northwest El Paso Hospital to Open Jan. 17

The Hospitals of Providence Transmountain Campus in Northwest El Paso will celebrate its grand opening on January 17, 2017 as construction on the brand new teaching hospital nears completion.

A Community Open House will also be held on Saturday, January 7, so that the public can get an early look at the campus. The hospital is located at 2000 Transmountain Road at the intersection of North Resler Drive.

See Before and After Street Views of Major El Paso Projects

Apartment rental site RENTCafé has compiled a series of eleven before and after Street View images of major projects in El Paso.

The sliders on the images at the site allow El Pasoans to view the changing streetscape by dragging the arrow bars left and right. The right side of each image depicts the Street View in 2007 while the left side shows the same spot in 2015.

Helipad Part of $63M Las Palmas Medical Center Expansion

Las Palmas Medical Center in West El Paso will soon undergo a $63 million dollar expansion across the street from the main hospital tower.

A 90,000 square foot addition will add three stories above the current intensive care unit, located at North Oregon Street and Rim Road.

Officials Break Ground on New Northwest El Paso Hospital

Ground was broken last week on a new multi-million dollar Sierra Providence Health Network (SPHN) hospital in Northwest El Paso that will take shape at the corner of Transmountain Road and Resler Drive. Officials touted their partnership with Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center in making the facility a teaching hospital.

Cardwell Collaborative Location Changed Back to Original Spot

The MCA Foundation has decided to build the 60,000 square foot Cardwell Collaborative building at the originally targeted location along Interstate 10. It is no longer seeking to build it at Jefferson High School.

MCA Foundation Eyes New Location for Biomedical Building

Cardwell Collaborative Could Now Be Built on Jefferson High School Land

The Medical Center of the Americas Foundation (MCA) announced last week that it would now like to build its biomedical research building on Jefferson High School land in Central El Paso. The MCA submitted its preliminary proposal to the El Paso Independent School District Board of Trustees last week.

The MCA outlines how it believes the 60,000 square foot Cardwell Collaborative will benefit Jefferson High School and Silva Health Magnet students by locating the building on Jefferson’s campus. It would require a lease to purchase 2.6 to 2.9 acres of land to work.

What’s In Store For 2014

These Are the Major Projects to Look Forward to This Year

It’s a new year in El Paso, and several major development projects are scheduled to get underway or be completed in 2014. From freeway projects on the West Side to major medical facilities on the East Side, most parts of the Sun City should see major activity.

Here’s a look at some of the larger developments that should see progress this year.

Projects slated for El Paso this year include (counterclockwise from top left) I-10 Collector-Distributor Lanes, the Montecillo Town Center, the Triple-A Ballpark, San Jacinto Plaza’s renovation, the Gayle Greve Hunt School of Nursing building, the Airport Hotel/Retail Complex, Eastside Crossings, the Sierra Providence East Medical Center expansion, the William Beaumont Army Medical Center replacement hospital, and the Northgate Transit-Oriented Development.

I-10 Collector-Distributor Lanes
Plans to add collector-distributor (CD) lanes to Interstate 10 in West El Paso have been in the works for years, but the project recently got a shot in the arm in the form of funding support from the County of El Paso. Now, the $150 freeway project could be set for construction to begin by the end of 2014.

The CD lanes will create a buffer for the main lanes by “collecting” and “distributing” traffic to and from on- and off-ramps between Executive Center Boulevard and Mesa Street. The number of lanes will vary along the five mile stretch of I-10.

Initial renderings of the planned project included toll lanes when first unveiled years back, but now only include regular main lanes in the middle of the freeway. No word on whether or not toll lanes will be included after all. The future, toll-only Border Highway West will have an interchange with I-10 within the boundaries of this project.

Montecillo Town Center
West El Paso should see a good amount of progress on the highly anticipated Montecillo Town Center project which will include the Alamo Drafthouse theater location as an anchor. The SmartCode development’s “Entertainment District” will include street retail, a big box retail space, commercial office space, and 99 residential units, according to initial site plan details.

No concrete timeline has been disclosed by the project’s developer, though the Alamo Drafthouse’s announcement in March of 2013 indicated it would be soon, and has indicated plans to open in Fall of 2014. Crews finally broke ground in November 2013 and have been working to clear the site for construction ever since.

MCA's Vision Becomes Reality

Fundraising Effort for First MCA Tech Park Building Gains Steam 

The Medical Center of the Americas (MCA) Foundation is ramping up its fundraising efforts to help make the planned Tech Park a reality at the medical campus in Central El Paso. Business and political leaders alike attended a fundraiser held last week for the future Cardwell Collaborative building, which is scheduled to break ground in 2014 at the new MCA Tech Park.

The fundraising effort has resulted in $10.3 million thus far, about 70% of the Foundation’s goal. This leaves around $3 million still left to raise.

The November 21, 2013 gala also honored businessman Jack Cardwell who donated an undisclosed “multi-million” dollar amount for the Tech Park’s first building, which has been named for him. Mr. Cardwell is known for creating the first Petro Stopping Center in 1975 and building it into a national company. The company was sold in 2007.

Gala organizers also honored the United States Economic Development Administration (EDA) for a $1 million grant awarded to the Cardwell Collaborative. The federal money can be used towards design and architecture costs. According to its website (www.eda.gov), the EDA “supports development in economically distressed areas of the United States” by making “strategic investments that foster job creation and attract private investment.”

Cinemark, Hospital Projects Rule Landscape

With so much project news seemingly focused on the downtown and lower west side areas of El Paso, it’s easy to overlook development and transportation projects occurring in the most populated part of the city, the east side.

The east side has the largest population of any of El Paso’s areas, holding more than one third of the city’s residents. The zip codes generally thought of as covering the east side of the city, 79925, 79935, 79936, and 79938, have a combined 223,289 residents, according to the 2010 Census. In comparison, that is more than twice as large the population that Las Cruces had in 2010.

Here’s are some of the larger-scale projects the east side is currently experiencing.

Cinemark Theater

Construction is well underway on El Paso’s newest movie theater on the city’s east side. Cinemark USA is building a 14 screen theater at the corner of Montana Avenue and Rich Beem Boulevard about a mile east of Loop 375.

Southwest Land Development of El Paso is developing the 20 acre shopping center, which is part of the larger Hueco Club Estates development, a residential subdivision which is using smart growth principles in its design. This includes making the neighborhoods more walkable and incorporating alleys for rear garage access for homes.

Cinemark's far east El Paso theater will have 14 screens when it opens.

The theater, announced in September of 2012, will be the chain’s fifth in El Paso once it is completed, and the third on the east side. Tinseltown USA at the Las Palmas Marketplace and Cinemark Cielo Vista are also within the wide boundaries of the east side.

Several Large Developments Set for El Paso

For many El Pasoans, the last year or so must seem like a parade of headlines announcing large, multi-million dollar projects slated for the Sun City. Indeed, several sizeable developments have recently been announced for El Paso, and construction is set to ramp up in the coming years.

From hotel projects to retail complexes, here is a look at some of the largest, non-transportation developments set to go up around El Paso.

Sundt Completes Prep Work for New Beaumont Medical Center on Fort Bliss

Sundt Construction has completed a “heavy civil construction” project at Fort Bliss to help prepare the area for the upcoming brand new William Beaumont Army Medical Center (WBAMC). That’s according to an update at the company’s blog.

According to the post, Sundt completed “extensive infrastructure and site development work” on the location off of Loop 375 in East Fort Bliss.

The $48 million project included “fencing the entire 320-acre site, installing wet and dry utilities, concrete paving,” and “building an electrical substation for the hospital.”

A major component of the project was the construction of a street bridge over the freeway and the related on- and off-ramps that will allow access to the site.

With the project completed, vertical construction may soon begin. The $1 billion WBAMC project includes construction of 1.13 million square foot complex on the site which will be a LEED certified building when completed. Sections of the hospital will vary from four to seven stories in height, and a 135-bed wing will be located in the tallest structure.
