Contractor Website Offers Additional External Views of Medical Center

The contractor for the replacement William Beaumont Army Medical Center currently under construction in East Fort Bliss has posted additional renderings of what the hospital will look like once completed. The images are available on the project website (cmhpbliss.com).

Loop 375 Widening to Extend Through Ft. Bliss to NE El Paso

The northern portion of the Purple Heart Memorial Highway, the section of Loop 375 that travels through Fort Bliss, will also be widened as part of an overall effort to expand freeway facilities in the Far East and Northeast parts of El Paso.

The Texas Department of Transportation (TXDOT) held a meeting last month to inform the public about the coming project, which stretches about 7.3 miles along Loop 375 from Dyer Street to the Spur 601 interchange.

One lane in each direction will be added on the inside of the existing freeway for the majority of the project length, from just east of Railroad Drive to a point near Spur 601. Approximately half a mile of Loop 375 will be completely reconstructed in East Fort Bliss.

The interchange at Sgt. Major Boulevard will also be improved as part of the project, including additional lanes on the ramps and turnarounds. All bridge structures will need to be retrofitted to accommodate the new freeway lanes.

Liberty Expressway to be Widened

Spur 601 to Get More Lanes, Frontage Roads

Yet another East El Paso freeway will see major construction in the coming years. That’s according to a Public Meeting Notice released by the Texas Department of Transportation (TXDOT).

Spur 601, also known as Liberty Expressway, will get an additional lane in each direction as a result of the project which stretches from Airport Road to Loop 375 in East Fort Bliss. This will increase the number of lanes to three in each direction. The Spur already has three lanes in each direction west of the planned project.

Frontage roads will also be added along the five-mile stretch, though it’s unclear if the gateways will span the entire distance. 

The project’s meeting comes on the heels of other similar projects in East El Paso and Fort Bliss publicized earlier this month. Frontage roads will also be added to Loop 375 from the Spur 601 interchange southward to Montana Avenue.

East El Paso, Fort Bliss to See More Highway Construction

Projects Lined Up for Loop 375, US 62, Zaragoza Rd.

The Texas Department of Transportation (TXDOT) will hold community meetings in the coming weeks to inform the public about four new projects planned for East El Paso and Fort Bliss. Projects include widening of highways and roads, building new frontage roads, and a first-of-its-kind interchange in El Paso.

Loop 375 Widening

The first project will widen Loop 375 from Spur 601 to Montana Avenue, adding a lane in each direction. Currently, the freeway has two travel lanes in each direction and the project will add a third.

Sundt Completes Prep Work for New Beaumont Medical Center on Fort Bliss

Sundt Construction has completed a “heavy civil construction” project at Fort Bliss to help prepare the area for the upcoming brand new William Beaumont Army Medical Center (WBAMC). That’s according to an update at the company’s blog.

According to the post, Sundt completed “extensive infrastructure and site development work” on the location off of Loop 375 in East Fort Bliss.

The $48 million project included “fencing the entire 320-acre site, installing wet and dry utilities, concrete paving,” and “building an electrical substation for the hospital.”

A major component of the project was the construction of a street bridge over the freeway and the related on- and off-ramps that will allow access to the site.

With the project completed, vertical construction may soon begin. The $1 billion WBAMC project includes construction of 1.13 million square foot complex on the site which will be a LEED certified building when completed. Sections of the hospital will vary from four to seven stories in height, and a 135-bed wing will be located in the tallest structure.

New $1B Beaumont Hospital, EPCC Add to Ft. Bliss Expansion

The ongoing expansion of Ft. Bliss continues as plans to construct a new William Beaumont Army Medical Center (WBAMC) move forward just off of Loop 375 and Spur 601. The $1 Billion dollar project includes construction of 1.13 million square foot complex on a 200+ acre site and will be a LEED certified building when completed.

Sections of the hospital will vary from four to seven stories in height, and a 135-bed wing will be located in the tallest structure. The hospital will have two access points, one near a new overpass currently under construction on Loop 375.

HDR Inc., a Nebraska-based architecture, engineering, consulting, and construction firm, designed the environmentally friendly medical center. According to HDR's project page, sustainable features in the design include "Alternative Energy, Bike Racks, Construction Waste Management, Daylighting & Views, Geothermal Energy, Heat Island Reduction Strategies, LEED Registered, Light Pollution Reduction, Local/Regional Materials, Recycling , and Renewable Energy On-site."

Army officials will soon announce the builder chosen for the project. The new facility will replace the current WBAMC located in Northeast El Paso. Plans for the older facility have not yet been announced.

EPCC at Fort Bliss

El Paso Community College (EPCC) announced recently that it will be adding a new Fort Bliss location in the near future. The college has been working for five years to make the campus at the Army post a reality. The plans are currently in the design/bidding phase which should be completed in 2013, and construction could start shortly thereafter.

This new campus branch will be located in the same vicinity as the upcoming William Beaumont Army Medical Center, near Loop 375 and Spur 601. Though located on post, students will be able to access the college via a new interchange currently under construction on Loop 375. The new campus will strengthen EPCC's current presence on base.
