Ballpark Crews Begin Work on Baseball Field

Lighting Fixture Installation is Now Complete

Construction crews at Downtown El Paso’s new Triple-A baseball stadium began placing gravel and sand on the grounds of the ballpark last week to prepare for installation of the final playing field.

Several tons of material will result in about four inches of gravel with ten inches of soil on top. This will set the stage for installation of Bermuda grass sod that will be rolled out on the field in the middle of March. The 14 inches of base material will serve as a drainage foundation.

Far above, crews already completed installation of the light fixtures that will illuminate the field. About 142 light fixtures were mounted on three towers and four poles, 110 feet above the field. According to the City of El Paso, the lighting system mirrors those used at other Major League Baseball facilities.

As previously reported, team officials have pushed back opening day to the end of April, which means that the El Paso Chihuahuas will play their first four “home” games in Tucson.
