The school is made possible thanks to a $25 million donation from the Hunt Family Foundation, though additional fundraising will be necessary to reach the final price tag, expected to cost over $50 million.
This will be the fourth school added to the burgeoning medical school campus in Central El Paso. following the Paul L. Foster School of Medicine, the Gayle Greve Hunt Nursing School, and the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences.
Officially called the Woody L. Hunt School of Dental Medicine, it is scheduled to open in fall of 2020. It has been nearly 50 years since last dental school opened in Texas.

The school's location within the campus has not been disclosed, nor are any renderings of the future school available.
The TTUHSC campus is part of the larger Medical Center of the Americas complex, which also includes University Medical Center, El Paso Children's Hospital, and the Cardwell Collaborative. Texas Tech first opened its four year medical school in El Paso in 2009.
The School of Dental Medicine announcement was made at a press conference on September 6, 2016.
