National pharmacy retailer CVS has plans to build a new location in Central El Paso, the same location where Walmart tried to build a Neighborhood Market three years ago.

The new CVS Pharmacy would go up at the corner of Montana Avenue and Chelsea Street, on the same property that is currently home to a Chico's Tacos location. Chico's would close and be torn down to make way for the CVS. The site is across the street from an existing Walgreen's pharmacy.
In 2013, Walmart proposed a 35,500 square foot store for the site and was met with loud public outcry against the project. Walmart officials ultimately pulled plans for the project after realizing they did not have enough City Council support for the required rezoning request.

The proposed CVS project will actually take up about half the area, with the retail building spanning about 12,000 square feet. Whereas Walmart required occupying the entire block, CVS's plans only require the southern half abutting Montana Avenue.
According to the site plan, the pharmacy would sit in the middle of the property with parking in front. A drive-through would be located at the rear. Entrances to the parking lot would be located along Montana Avenue, Chelsea Street, and Cardon Street.

The rezoning request will be considered at the May 19, 2016, City Plan Commission meeting. No timeline is available for construction.
