TXDOT to Close I-10 Near UTEP this Weekend for Construction

The Texas Department of Transportation (TXDOT) will close Interstate 10 near the University of Texas at El Paso again this weekend. The closure is necessary to place concrete girders over I-10 as part of the Spur 1966 (Schuster Avenue) overpass project.
Concrete girders have already been placed over a UTEP parking lot as part of the Spur 1966 project. (Haydon Building Corp.)

Both eastbound and westbound lanes will close on Sunday, June 8, from 5:00 a.m. through Monday, June 9, at 6:00 a.m. Eastbound traffic will be forced to exit at Sunland Park Drive, while westbound commuters will have to exit at Porfirio Diaz Street.

Ultimately, Schuster Avenue will be extended over I-10 and connect with Paisano Drive to the west. Eventually, Schuster will also connect to the future Border Highway West tollway via a new interchange.

This will be TXDOT’s second attempt in less than a month at placing the girders; the first attempt had to be postponed when an alleged drunk driver crashed through temporary barricades on May 11th and killed two workers at the construction site. The freeway remained closed for most of that Sunday as law enforcement investigated the crash.

The first portion of the Spur 1966 project was completed last year when the Schuster Avenue roundabout was completed. Haydon Building Corp. of Phoenix is the contractor on the project.
