City to Hold Meeting on Downtown Pedestrian Pathway

A community meeting will be held this week to update the public on the upcoming Downtown Pedestrian Pathway project. Officials from the Engineering and Construction Management Department indicate that work will soon begin on the pathway.
The Pedestrian Pathway project will undergo construction in phases.

The Convention Center North Pedestrian Pathway will take the place of a parking lot and maintenance paths on the northern side of the Convention Center. The project also includes enhancements to Durango Street from San Antonio Avenue to the baseball stadium site and portions of Main Drive and Sheldon Court near Arts Festival Plaza.

According to the meeting notice, construction “will include shade structures, stamped and colored concrete pathways, expanded sidewalks, landscaping, lighting, street furnishings, public art, and gathering places.”

Construction was scheduled to begin this month. The project’s contract was awarded to Quantum Engineering Consultants of El Paso and will be paid for using 2012 Quality of Life bonds.

The community meeting will be held on Thursday, September 26, 2013 at 5:30 p.m in the El Paso Room of the Convention Center.
